Say goodbye to people on Twitter who does not want to be your friend

Just like a lot of you "tweeters", I have been thinking how to manage friends and followers on twitter. Let's have a look at the following tools and if they can perhaps offer a solution.

I have been using tools like Twiends, to get more followers, but the problem is that the ratio to people that I follow have been growing a bit out of proportion to the people following me.

Today I want to unfollow people who don't follow me back. Let's have a look at the tools available on the world wide interwebs ;P

Your Twitter Karma

I tried Twitter Karma after reading a positive review on http://socialtimes.com/twitter-bulk-follow-unfollow-tools_b8651. My first impression was that this is a no frills app, and this sometimes proves to be very effective.

You first need to authorise the app, once done, you need to press the Whack button ... sounds cool - BUT it took ages to bring up any results.

The results displayed was accurate, and you could select multiple or all account - but the options after this is a bit odd and really did not make sense? Perhaps I am just daft, but after selecting people that I already follow the following options came up:
- Bulk Follow
- Bulk Block
and then there is a link to Where did Bulk Unfollow go?

--- On January 15, 2010, Twitter instructed us to remove the "bulk unfollow" capability of Tweeter Karma as it has been determined to violate their Automation Rules and Best Practices. We have done so in order to comply with their request. We apologize to you, our users, for having to make this change, but hope you will understand it is outside of our control. ---

This is a deal killer for me unfortunately :-/

Seems like Twitter does not like bulk unfollow functionality, and Twitter claims that it is in violation of it's TOS.

Quick workaround - in the Chrome Web Store and Firefox extension store do a search for CHECK ALL :-)

Friend or Follow

Who unfollowed me on Twitter? Who's not following me back? Who am I not following back? Who are my friends? Find out!

This is a great looking web-app with accurate results. The only downside is that to get your hands on the good stuff, you need to pay $9.99/mo.

In South Africa this works out to over a R100/mo and it makes this tool a bit to expensive.

Unfollow Twitter users who don't tweet often enough

This tool offers to unfollow twitter users who have not posted any tweets recently.
Untweeps only permits you to unfollow people who have not tweeted in a specific time range, like in the last 30 days for instance,

Works effectively, but not yet what I am looking for... so the quest conitnues

And I think we finally have a winner! ManageFlitter allows you to view your lists in Follow Order, Followers, Following, Listed Tweets, Username and Last Tweet.

When hovering over a listed user, you will get a bio and some more info.

I had to use the Check All extension, but it worked quickly and efficiently - without costing me a cent.

ManageFlitter also automatically sends your public Google+ posts to Twitter, as long as you have the service connected to your Twitter account.

MTN service degradation

Where we stay we do not have access to any Telkom infrastructure, and were forced to make u

se of 3G products. We happily paid the over inflated 3G prices, seeing that the quality of service was quite acceptable. Last year October however our connectivity took a serious dip. At present we have no connectivity. We are paying almost R900/mo for an uncapped service that cannot open email or even a local news site.

We at first thought it must be our equipmeTNnt. We were using a Planet 3G router for almost 1 year then, and thought it might be time to replace it. We then opted for a very expensive Mikrotik solution. Still no improvement. We then purchased a booster aerial. Still no luck. R5k poorer and still nothing!

Our service has now gone from bad to worse and is impacting on our work, and we are forced to work longer hours. When the problem started, we found that from 7PM every evening we have little to no connectivity. Today, if we are able to establish a connection, the speed is much worse than a 56k dial-up. Our voice quality has also dropped significantly, and most of our calls are being dropped. Last week I had to call a customer back 9 times on a 3 minute call.

Most of the time it is a battle getting through to competent technical support staff, when you call the mobile operators. We have spent countless hours on the phone with clueless technicians.

After lodging two complaints on http://www.hellopeter.com we finally got a response. This is the final result:

We have done drive tests in the area, and found that the signal levels are very low, especially on 3G. As per attached correspondence , it does not look like we can improve coverage in this area.

Our reality is that we rely on connectivity to earn a living, and without no connectivity, there is no income.

We are not being unreasonable here: We did not go out and buy all this stuff to use in some area where there wasn't any signal and now supposedly sit with buyers remorse. No, we were actually happy customers until the MTN tower broke in Paarl. We know this, because a consultant from a company called Bytes, was hired by MTN to investigate the issue, and he told us there is a problem. We also have the Google Latitude logs to prove it.

Just to make matters much much worse, my family suffered a terrible personal loss because of this. Last week (and now if this was America I would have sued) Thursday, we were forced to drive out to our office after hours, due to the lack of internet once-again. We went home just after 5PM to check on our pets. Left about 15mins later. We came back 3 hours later to a heart-breaking sight. Our boston terrier, Pogo was bitten by a snake, and by the time we found him it was too late. We rushed him to the vet, but he sadly passed away in my arms on our way to the vet. Struggling to get a call through with 3 phones, all on a bad MTN signal - imagine the words I have for these people.
If we had the same connectivity as we did last year October, then we would have stayed home - because it was only emails we needed to respond to. And even if our dog found a snake in the garden, we might have been in a position to save his life.

I am slowly getting fed up with the poor technology service in this country. Large profit hungry foreign corporations bleed us dry, while they do not accept the responsibility for providing the service - which only they are licensed for.
With the privilege comes a responsibility. I have now seen first hand what happens when these careless operators are allowed to run wild without consequence.

10 Recent Google Algorithm Changes You Need to Know to Improve Your Ranking

Any time there is an update to Google’s search algorithm its big news. Our readers work themselves into a fluster speculating what aspects have changed and the impact it will have on their website’s ranking.

Brace yourself – Google is at it again. There have been some recent changes from Google, but the good news is that there is no need to guess this time, Google has (for once) released details of ten new algorithm changes it has made to how it shows and ranks search results.

In no particular order (and directly from Google), here they are:

Cross-language information retrieval updates: For queries in languages where limited web content is available (Afrikaans, Malay, Slovak, Swahili, Hindi, Norwegian, Serbian, Catalan, Maltese, Macedonian, Albanian, Slovenian, Welsh, Icelandic), we will now translate relevant English web pages and display the translated titles directly below the English titles in the search results. This feature was available previously in Korean, but only at the bottom of the page. Clicking on the translated titles will take you to pages translated from English into the query language.
What this means for webmasters: You will now be able to reach new markets that you couldn’t previously due to language boundaries.

Snippets with more page content and less header/menu content: This change helps us choose more relevant text to use in snippets. As we improve our understanding of web page structure, we are now more likely to pick text from the actual page content, and less likely to use text that is part of a header or menu.
What this means for webmasters: Ensure you have relevant and quality content on the right pages of your site and spend less time manipulating your header descriptions, and alt and meta tags.

Better page titles in search results by de-duplicating boilerplate anchors: We look at a number of signals when generating a page’s title. One signal is the anchor text in links pointing to the page. We found that boilerplate links with duplicated anchor text are not as relevant, so we are putting less emphasis on these. The result is more relevant titles that are specific to the page’s content.
What this means for webmasters: With this information laid out by Google, it is clear that site wide linking (in headers, footers and blog rolls) will not lead to any better ranking.

Length-based autocomplete predictions in Russian: This improvement reduces the number of long, sometimes arbitrary query predictions in Russian. We will not make predictions that are very long in comparison either to the partial query or to the other predictions for that partial query. This is already our practice in English.
What this means for webmasters: Good news for Russian users, but pretty useless for the majority of searchers who use English.

Extending application rich snippets: We recently announced rich snippets for applications. This enables people who are searching for software applications to see details, like cost and user reviews, within their search results. This change extends the coverage of application rich snippets, so they will be available more often.
What this means for webmasters: software applications must now include descriptive rich snippets in order to get a higher ranking.

Retiring a signal in Image search: As the web evolves, we often revisit signals that we launched in the past that no longer appear to have a significant impact. In this case, we decided to retire a signal in Image Search related to images that had references from multiple documents on the web.
What this means for webmasters: This tweak is aimed to improve image search function. But maybe Google is trying to decrease the link juice from sites like Flicker, Dailymotion etc.

Fresher, more recent results: As we announced just over a week ago, we’ve made a significant improvement to how we rank fresh content. This change impacts roughly 35 percent of total searches (around 6-10% of search results to a noticeable degree) and better determines the appropriate level of freshness for a given query.
What this means for webmasters: In order to rank well in the SERPs, you must be updating your content almost daily especially on blogs.

Refining official page detection: We try hard to give our users the most relevant and authoritative results. With this change, we adjusted how we attempt to determine which pages are official. This will tend to rank official websites even higher in our ranking.
What this means for webmasters: Basically, this is good news for long-established brands. The official sites will get better rankings and the industry giants get a stronger hold on search results too!

Improvements to date-restricted queries: We changed how we handle result freshness for queries where a user has chosen a specific date range. This helps ensure that users get the results that are most relevant for the date range that they specify.
What this means for webmasters: If your company’s news is in Google News then expect it to be given more prominence now during the time that the news is still relevant.

Prediction fix for IME queries: This change improves how Autocomplete handles IME queries (queries which contain non-Latin characters). Autocomplete was previously storing the intermediate keystrokes needed to type each character, which would sometimes result in gibberish predictions for Hebrew, Russian and Arabic.
What this means for webmasters: Nothing specific, just that the user experience for non English speaking users will get better.

SEACOM is yet again experiencing downtime, and this time around it may last for more than a week

Summary: SEACOM downtime which started on 8 October may take as long as a week to resolve.

SEACOM is experiencing downtime again. The cable system went down on Saturday 8 October 2011, and initial feedback suggests that the downtime may last for a few days.

SEACOM said that their Mediterranean backhaul service provider is experiencing a service affecting outage between Abu Talat and Marseilles. This is affecting all SEACOM traffic to Europe.

“SEACOM is working at restoring our customers on alternative routes and will continue to monitor the situation closely,” the SEACOM website states.

MWEB informed their subscribers on Sunday 9 October MWEB said that they were still waiting for an expected time when the problem will be resolved.

“At present we are running at just over 60% of our full international requirement. Seacom is arranging additional capacity for us on alternative routes and we expect to be back up to full capacity by the end of today,” said MWEB ISP CEO Derek Hershaw.

Openweb also informed their subscribers that the SEACOM cable is down again. “Faithfully known as the phantom cable, the SA internet will be suffering dearly again this week due to its failure,” Openweb founderKeoma Wright told subscribers.

TENET CTO Andrew Alston said that they have had confirmation that SEACOM is offline and is unlikely to come back online for a few days.

The SEACOM downtime seems to be related to a failure on the Telecom Egypt North (TE North) submarine telecommunications cable linking France and Egypt.

Early indications suggest that it may take around a week to repair the problem. SEACOM may however be down for 10 days or longer.

SEACOM could not immediately be reached for comment.

What is the best practice rules for torrent use in South Africa?

South Africa has a unique internet connectivity environment, and therefore many of the tips, tricks, suggestions and recommendations found from torrent clients or websites do not apply to the South African torrent user. Our networks easily become congested and our bandwidth availability is still comparatively much lower than abroad. Therefore we recommend that you adhere to the following best practice rules to ensure a satisfactory experience:

- Never exceed an upload / download ratio of more than 20 / 100.

This means that if a specific torrent has downloaded 100Mb it should not have uploaded more than 20Mb or 20% of the downloaded figure. A good percentage here would be 10% or less.

- Never exceed a download speed of 80%.

Even one active torrent running at maximum capacity can slow down your internet connection to such an extent that other services are not functional during that time, such as browsing the internet or sending / receiving e-mail. Therefore always set your download limit to no more than 80% of the available bandwidth and keep in mind your other services will perform slower during this time due to the congested bandwidth usage. If you use other services frequently whilst a torrent is active we recommend setting your torrent's maximum download speed between 50 and 70 percent.

- Once your torrent has completely downloaded stop seeding immediately.

Seeding exclusively after the torrent has stopped leeching will severely congest and degrade your internet service especially if your torrent client is incorrectly configured.

- Limit the amount of active torrents according to your available bandwidth.

Your bandwidth greatly determines the performance and capability of your torrent downloads. We do not recommend having more than one torrent active on a 384k ADSL connection as more can severely affect your other internet services during that time.

- Always check your torrent client’s settings after an upgrade or reinstall. Your UD limits might have changed resulting in higher than recommended upload speeds and data.

imo.im is a web-based multi-network instant messaging service. It lets users chat on AIM, Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Jabber, MSN, MySpace, Skype, and Yahoo.

To be honest, I’m not much of a chatter. I don’t have chat buddies from all chatting platforms. The only IM client I use is GTalk from within my gmail interface. So if you asked me what the best IM (instant messaging) client is out there, I wouldn’t be able to give you an opinion.

SEACOM Link Failure - AGAIN!

Last night just before 23:30 the SEACOM link went down.

It seems that it is not an undersea cable break on SEACOM which is responsible for the latest downtime, but rather issues on the route between Alexandria and Cairo.

We are still waiting on feedback and ETAs on repairs. Will keep you posted from this side.

iPad 2 is on it's way

A year has barely passed and there is a brand new Apple iPad 2 coming out in the next few weeks. It took awhile and rumors that ran rampant prior to its announcement were everywhere, but the iPad 2 has officially been revealed. The device boasts a slimmer design, a heftier processor and a new version of iOS 4 to boot. By any measure, it looks to be a fine alternative to any other tablet on the market and could perform just as well at retail as its predecessor.

For those of you who is still not familiar with the iPad: The iPad is the first tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. Announced on January 27, 2010, it is part of a device category between a smartphone and a laptop computer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad

The iPad can only run on Apple approved programs including iPhone apps. Instead of using a typical stylus, the display would be using a multi touch screen along with a virtual keyboard. To surf on the Internet, Wi-Fi is used and even some models use the 3G network.

What will be new features, upgrades, tweaks and fixes for the iPad 2? The processor will be stronger so it can pull basically more horsepower to get more things done at the same time. There will even be USB connectivity. The video quality will be much better because the Apple iPad 2 will have a higher resolution screen display.

On the Apple iPad 2, there will be a dual camera one is front facing and one in the back also and will display retina eye. Apple is saying the speakers will be larger for better sound quality and will be placed on the back of the iPad. There will be for the gamers a three axis gyroscope.

Silicon cases are being made for the Apple iPad 2. These cases are open, so the camera can be used and hearing the music and video coming out of the one speaker which is being placed in the back and will be surround my metal mesh.
The main discussion is will the screen size change. The screen is currently at nearly ten inches and is an LCD display. Apple has announced the iPad 2 will be reduced by 3 mm and on the back panel towards the upper center, the light sensor will be moved there.
So with rumors blended in very little facts, it is just basically a wait and see ball game for the world to know what the new Apple iPad 2 will really look like along with any new features.

What the F.U.P?!?

OK, so most people get utterly confused when talking about Fair Usage Policies (FUP).

It’s actually quite simple and non technical: The Fair Usage Policy exists to protect all users on the network by ensuring the internet service levels are at a constant and usable level. Basically it prevents those that want to abuse the bandwidth by using it for extremely large downloads and uploads from degrading the service for “normal users”, by limiting their download ability should they start to show excessive usage on the network compared to others.

Let’s cut through the mustard and get straight to the meat: ADSL is finally becoming more and more affordable in South Africa and Wazzup’s new products make it even more so….
